Why Volcanic Soil Matters
At Basaltic Farms, our garlic grows in the volcanic basaltic soil of California's Southern Cascades — the same mineral-rich foundation that researchers have identified as measurably superior for crop nutrition. A 2024 study co-authored by Newcastle University found that crops grown in basalt-amended soil had significantly higher tissue calcium and grain potassium than crops grown in untreated fields. The reason this matters is simple: basalt slowly releases calcium, magnesium, potassium, and trace minerals that plants need to thrive. We're not amending our soil with basalt, we're actually farming on it.
